What books to read to a 3 to 6 year old

How to choose picture books for children aged 3, 4, 5 and 6 according to their stage, what makes a good children's book and the stories that hook them most.

2 min read

Between 3 and 6, children change enormously: they go from listening to stories on your lap to trying to read their first words. So the perfect book at 3 isn’t the same as at 6. Here’s a simple guide to getting it right.

Age 3: rhymes, repetition and lots of pictures

At this age, children love recognising and predicting. They enjoy:

  • Repeated lines they can say with you.
  • Sound effects: making the animal noise or the thunder.
  • Big, clear illustrations with details to spot.
  • Short stories you can read in one go.

Tip: let them finish the lines they know. They love “reading” even before they can.

Age 4: characters they can relate to

At 4, children start putting themselves in the characters’ shoes. These work really well:

  • Everyday stories: siblings, school, night-time fears.
  • Characters with clear emotions: the angry one, the scared one, the funny one.
  • Simple humour: someone falling in the water, a frog who grumbles about everything.

Ages 5 and 6: first solo reading

This is when many children start reading on their own. It helps a lot if the book uses clear, simple letters close to the ones they learn at school.

Look for books with:

  • Short sentences and simple words.
  • Not too much text per page, so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
  • A story that hooks them, so they want to know what happens next.

What makes a good picture book

Whatever the age, check these before buying:

  1. You like it too. You’ll read it fifty times.
  2. The illustrations tell part of the story, not just decorate it.
  3. It has emotion and humour: a problem, a squabble, a laugh and a calm ending.
  4. It sounds good read aloud: if it has rhythm when you read it out, it’ll work.
  5. The text is generously sized if they’re starting to read.

Stories that almost always work

  • Sibling stories, especially with a new baby on the way.
  • Animal stories where animals behave like children.
  • Bedtime stories with a calm ending.
  • Stories with a grumpy character: children love laughing at grown-ups who get cross about everything.

Draquis & Mipis: What a Racket in the Forest! was created with all of this in mind: two dragon siblings, a grumpy frog, lots of humour, big illustrations and clear letters for early readers. It works for listening at 3 and reading alone at 6. Take a look inside.
